    2 Cor. 5:20

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

    –Paul

    "Baptism (of the Spirit)" verses/notes

This is going to be a collection of verses and possibly notes for a discussion/study I am doing with a friend on what the Scriptures have to say about the baptism of the Spirit. I will continue to add to it for the duration of the study:

    RELEVANT ARTICLES and QUOTES:

    Baptism of Jesus, Theopedia
    1. Here at his baptism the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is first prefigured. It is here at his baptism that the perfect one intentionally identifies himself with repentant sinners, and demonstrates his full humility. It is at his baptism where the redemptive ministry of Jesus Christ begins.
    2. Keener stands alone in noting the inherent humility displayed by Jesus at his baptism, "In a traditional Mediterranean culture where society stressed honor and shame, Jesus relinquishes his rightful honor to embrace other's shame. After Jesus' public act of humility, God publicly identified Jesus as his own son..."
    3. "It is the fact that never in all history before this had any Jew submitted to being baptized. The Jews knew and used baptism, but only for proselytes who came into Judaism from some other faith. It was natural that the sin-stained, polluted proselyte should be baptized, but no Jew had ever conceived that he, a member of the chosen people, a son of Abraham, assured of God's salvation, could ever need baptism. Baptism was for sinners, and no Jew ever conceived of himself as a sinner shut out from God. Now for the first time in their national history the Jews realized their own sin and their own claimant need of God,. Never before had there been such a unique national movement of penitence and of search for God."
Baptism of the Holy Spirit, by Greg Koukl
    1. "So the baptism of the Spirit is when the believer gets the Spirit. It becomes a part of him and fully identified with Him so much so that you don't even distinguish the red dye from the shirt anymore. The shirt is red because it is soaked with the red dye, and we are Christians because we are soaked with the Spirit. At that time of being baptized, the Bible uses different terminology to describe what is going on. It says in Ephesians 1 and 4 that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, we have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, we have drunk of the Spirit. Lots of different language to identify the same thing... So what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is and this is a very important distinction, it is not the manifestation of any particular gift. It is the reception of the Spirit which becomes part of us at the time of salvation. That's my belief."
    2. "The filling captures a sense of the control of the Holy Spirit on the one who has Him. So you can possess the Spirit because you have been baptized in the Spirit, but when you are filled then the power of the Spirit is manifest through you and different things might happen. One of those might be speaking in tongues, or prophesying, or witnessing boldly, or some other kind of miraculous manifestation. In the book of Acts just about every time a person is filled with the Spirit you see a supernatural manifestation.
    3. "Now the question becomes, when does a man get the Spirit? Ephesians 1:13 says, "In Him, Christ, you also after listening to the message of the truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise." So, you hear the message, you believe, you are sealed. It's all part of the package. Nothing is said of baptism." (NOTE: This quote may be from a different Koukl article)

What Is the Primary Meaning of Baptism? Some Translational Difficulties

    1. Trying to get a hold on the essential meaning of baptism can be somewhat elusive. Most lexicons attempt to distinguish between a literal meaning and a figurative meaning. The literal meaning for baptizō is invariably listed as “to dip, immerse, wash.”3 Arndt and Gingrich give the figurative meaning of “baptism” as a type of Israel’s passage through the Red Sea, martyrdom, and being overwhelmed by something.4 Thayer adds that it can imply following Moses (1 Corinthians 10:2), uniting all believers to one body (1 Corinthians 12:13), bringing them into fellowship with Christ (Galatians 3:28), imbuing them richly with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5), and overwhelming unbelievers with fire in the day of judgment (Matthew 3:11).5
    2. In Daniel 4:30 (LXX), baptō represents the Hebrew tseba, which means “to dip or to wet.”11 Yet here, because of the nature of the “dew from heaven,” it is not translated “dipped” but instead “drenched” (4:33 NASB, NIV, NLT, TNK) or “wet” (4:33, KJV, NKJV).
    3. Isaiah 21:4 in the LXX literally reads “lawlessness baptizes me,” having the sense of “overwhelms me.” The Hebrew ba‘ath has the meaning of “terrify,” except in the Piel where its intensity can picture “to overwhelm.”10
    4. The baptism of the Spirit is twice referred to in Acts as that which the Holy Spirit poured out (ekcheō - 2:33; 10:45), and twice referred to as a fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy concerning the “pouring out” of the Spirit in the last days upon all flesh (2:17,18). In Hebrews 9:10, baptismois is translated “washings” (KJV, NKJV, NASB), “ceremonial washings” (NIV), and “ritual washing” (NLT), referring to the various washings prescribed in the Levitical law. A number of these requirements are found in Leviticus 11:25, 28, and 40, where the Hebrew kabac and the Greek of the LXX plunō represent the normal word for “wash.”12

    OBSERVATIONS/THOUGHTS from discussions so far:

    6-5-09
    - Apparently, being filled with the Spirit is not necessarily connected with water baptism or other believers laying hands on a person, etc. John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit while still in his mother's womb!! His mother was filled at the greeting of Mary, and his father, Zacharias (a priest), we are told was filled with the Spirit but no mention of anything preceding it.

    - J the B said that: 'He [Jesus] will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.' Being baptized with the Spirit is an act of God according to His will and His timing, not because it is requested or prayed for necessarily... nor because of the laying on of hands.

    - Sometimes being filled with the Spirit is accompanied by tongues or prophesy or speaking boldly, etc. but not always.

    - Jesus was both baptized in water and filled with the Spirit. Perhaps Jesus, being in human form, needed to be filled with the Spirit in order to carry out his ministry and rescue mission!

    Isaiah 44:3
For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
           and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants.

    Joel 2:28
    "And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.

    Joel 2:29
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

    Zechariah 12:10
"I will (A)pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have (B)pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one (C)mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.

    Matthew 3:11
"As for me, (A)I baptize you [a]with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; (B)He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

    Listen With Your Eyes

"But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
    –Matthew 22:31,32

When Jesus answered the Sadducees here, he said something very interesting about hearing God speak. He said 'have you not read what was spoken to you by God'. He equates reading Scripture with being spoken to by God. Can God communicate audibly or through a 'still small voice' if He wants to? Of course. The question is, is this His primary means of communicating with us today? My only concern is for believers who think they are supposed to be listening and hearing directly from God, but all they hear is silence. It can lead to anxiety, doubt, and/or some other crisis of faith. I hope this doesn't come across as my trying to be divisive, but I only mention it out of brotherly love and concern.

    Colossians 3:1-3

1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

    John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

    Hebrews 10:39

But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.

    Can Christians Reject Salvation?

Here are a couple verses for Christians to reflect on. Do the following verses from Hebrews show that it is possible to be a Christian, and yet at some point reject salvation or renounce your faith? This is not the same as losing your salvation, or having it 'snatched' away from you. God promises that no one can take you from His hands, but can you remove yourself from His hands, so-to-speak, reject Him after having been once saved? These verses seem to indicate that you can:

3:12,14 - Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God... For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end...

6:4-6 - For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

    10:29 -
How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

10:39 - But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.

    Any thoughts are welcome.

Ps 2:7 - Begotten, Not Created

"I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee" – Psalm. 2:7

Are the writers of Scripture asserting that the Son is a very specially exalted, but ultimately, created being? In particular, is Psalm 2:7 setting forth that there is a point during God's creation of the world at which the Son was "begotten" by God the Father?

    Acts 13:30-33:

"But God raised Him from the dead; and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people. And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'You are My Son; Today I have begotten You.'

What is the day of the begottenness of Jesus as the Son? It's the day of resurrection, isn't it? The day Jesus was begotten as the Son of God was not the day He was created; it was the day He resurrected and the day God the Father enthroned Him, or installed Him, as the Messianic ruler with all the full authority and rights and privileges that come with that office. He was begotten, that is, enthroned and installed, as the Son, a messianic term, on the day of His resurrection. The term has nothing to do with the Son of God being a begotten or created being...

    Romans 1:3-4:

concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

    – Walt Russel, "Psalm 2:7 The Created Meaning of the Created Son," Christian Research Journal 28,3 (2005): 28.

    Don't Look Back!

Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." – Luke 9:26

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 3:13-14

What Kind of an Example are You?

How many of us can say along with Paul:

"Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."
    – 1 Corinthians 11:1

    Acts 5:41

"The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing, because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name."

    Proverbs 30:4

Who has  ascended into heaven and descended?
Who has gathered the   wind in His fists?
Who has wrapped the waters in His garment?
Who has  established all the ends of the earth?
What is His  name or His son's name?
    Surely you know!

Life and Hope in a Fallen World

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved.

    Romans 8:18-24

    Fixed on Eternity

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

    -Apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 4:18)

    John 6:38-40

For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
